Scottish Schools get Online
|
|
|
The Scottish Schools get Online project recognizes how school websites can improve communication across the school community and the role they can play in involving parents. SEED, keen to see more schools developing parent-friendly and informative websites funded a project led by LTScotland called Scottish Schools get Online, its aim: 'to support schools across Scotland in developing high quality websites which offer appropriate information for parents and others.'
After a rigorous selection process, they chose take2theweb as their site building tool and it seems to have worked well for them. In their evaluation, teachers said:“I have loved every minute of setting up the website. The training has been brilliant, the support great and it's good to get together and share ideas. I really hope you can continue funding so we get continued support, and can add some new schools to the list of "Get Onliners"!”
“It has been great to be part of the pilot schools working on take2theweb. I am supporting other users in the authority, which is beneficial to me as well as it helps reinforce what I've been doing. I have enjoyed being part of the group but regret not being able to attend all the meetings for various reasons.”
“I find take2theweb very addictive and get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing the finished page I've been working on.”
“High - getting published! Actually seeing all those hours of work actually paying off! The school had tried to set up websites before - unsuccessfully - "death by committee" - but in a few weeks I had an up to date, user friendly website on the net for anyone to look at. Pupils use it all the time for revision, parents use it for info. It's great! Low - still not getting picked up by Google. Intuitive Media is on the case though - I don't know what I'd do without them. Every now and again there's a wee glitch - they fix it immediately!” Visit the project site and check out the excellent "How to" guides and download the brilliant "Creating and Managing a School Website" guide.

Evaluate Seal of Approval for take2theweb
|
 |
Evaluate has published a stunning Interim Evaluation report for take2theweb. Evaluations are carried out by classroom teachers, based on a three week study of the resources. Teachers will now go on to use the projects in school for a further six weeks, after which the full evaluations will be published.
Evaluate is the Digital Evaluation Service appointed by the DfES to assess products registered on Curriculum Online. It is partnership between learnthings and The Guardian.
Here are some extracts:
With a little exploration of the screen, support links and online guide help, users can made rapid progress. Within a few minutes I was able to add a heading and graphics from files without any problems.
take2theweb is an online service for the creation, management and distribution of a school website. This is an effective way and well managed way to create web content. By using any web-enabled PC and the appropriate password, you can avoid organizational difficulties normally associated with website production by groups. Passwords control levels of access allowing students to take on roles as contributors and editors for subject or school-based contexts. This extends understanding of the web as a medium for expression and communication and meets a variety of subject aims. As confidence grows the opportunity to add video or multimedia files encourages students to use other equipment and software to prepare their input. An administrator has ultimate responsibility for what is finally published, but students will feel directly involved in the overall web presence of the school. As a number of people can easily contribute content, this helps keep the site you create dynamic and alive.

Intuitive Media take2theweb in Scotland
|
 |
Scottish schools will now be able to benefit from a sophisticated website creation tool after Intuitive Media won the contract to take Scottish schools 2theweb. Intuitive Media is the contracted supplier for the Scottish Schools Get Online Scheme organized by Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS). As part of the scheme, SEED are funding a pilot and offering a number of schools a free take2theweb license. Each school will be able to create their own individual website using the recently upgraded system.
take2theweb offers schools, communities and businesses the opportunity to take full control of the content, appearance and purpose of their website and eliminates the need for expensive agency-controlled sites. take2theweb sites can be edited as necessary, and with no specialist ICT skills needed, the whole school can help to create a site that is up-to-date and supports the school's communications with the wider community. The integrity of the site is protected with multiple-level passwords, which can be tailored to allow various levels of access to uploading and publishing content on the website.... including contributions from children.
The focus of the Scottish Schools Get Online Scheme, which is currently running in 20 schools, is to create websites that increase parental participation in school life. Websites are not only giving parents information about their children's activities and achievements within the school, they are also inviting feedback and contributions from parents through the site. The aim of the project is to improve communications within school communities, and therefore improve the quality of home-school links.
Scottish schools already using take2theweb are creating some stunning websites packed to the gills with information and teaching tools. Many encourage pupils to add content to the site and create areas for parents and other community groups. Intuitive Media's Director of Projects, John Smith, says, "We are absolutely delighted to be working with LTS and schools in Scotland. We are seeing some inspirational work already and are looking forward to seeing more sites going live during the coming months."
LTS and Intuitive Media hope that all Scottish schools will soon benefit from take2theweb and the flexibility it allows. By bringing an interactive element to their website, schools will be able to communicate more effectively with parents and enhance the children's experience of e-learning, communications and education.

For School Communities - New Version of take2theweb Now Available
|
 |
A new version of take2theweb is now available, and with an array of new features and security settings, schools can set up a professional website without the intervention of an expensive agency. After four years of bringing technology and schools closer together, Intuitive Media's new take2theweb is about to make designing a website even easier.
take2theweb is all about making web technology accessible to everyone and bringing all levels of a school together to build and maintain a website which really enhances their communications. There are five main upgraded areas of take2theweb including security, which is always a top priority at IM.
Multi-level security has been a key feature of take2theweb earlier versions but it now offers five levels, each with a separate password so that administrators, teachers, parents, pupils and the wider community can all take part in building a functioning and interactive website. The contents of each website is decided by each school, with greater control over file uploads and the appearance can be personalised by each user utilizing the powerful page layout and response form creators. The navigation system is even more flexible - take2theweb really does put the power of the web in your hands.
The fifth new feature of take2theweb is very much at the heart of what Intuitive Media does. Using technology to enhance learning and communities is a key part of the new take2theweb, and with easy-to-create site sections that work together, multiple schools can join up to form a web community bringing together schools, parents and pupils.
Existing customers are keen to point out the ease of using take2theweb, even if they have no specialist IT or web skills:
"I had no web skills at all, but with take2theweb, it took me just two days to create a better site than the one we had bought from a web company and there is no charge for updating it." It is also a great way to embed ICT as pupils can pitch in and create pages using the templates provided - as well as their imagination:
"Just a little email to thank you for a wonderful product. Our latest group of children have done some wonderful things with the templates. The parents who came to the final presentation were overwhelmed by what their children had created - so much so they have asked if we would put on sessions for them (one pair were grandparents)" To find out more about how you can benefit from take2theweb, visit the web site.

|
Roy Hattersley at the Launch
|
take2theweb is helping to promote adult education and training amongst rural communities living in the heart of the Peak District.
On Friday 5 March, journalist and former cabinet minister Rt. Hon. Roy Hattersley launched the College of the Peak, a new adult learners initiative which aims to support the training and education of people from rural communities in order to improve the quality of life and economic prosperity.
The College of the Peak website, which is created using take2theweb technology, is of pivotal importance to the project, as it provides a gateway to learning for people who may not ordinarily have access to such opportunities. Partner organisations are able to contribute directly to the website through the unique take2theweb multi-contributor systems.
As well as providing funding for community projects, the College of the Peak provides a wide range of training courses from financial management, marketing, fundraising and health and safety training, to dry stone walling, speciality food production, and performing arts.
At the launch, which was attended by representatives from over 50 education establishments, Mr Hattersley pledged his support for the project and said that it was vital for the future of our villages that traditional crafts and skills were retained and passed on to younger generations of men and women.

take2theweb - Building Community Websites
|
 |
|
St Catherine's School
|
Schools, universities and businesses are harnessing the power of take2theweb to create superb community websites. By using the take2theweb modular system, organisations can issue departments, franchisees, or associates with their own password-protected "slave" accounts, that are seamlessly joined to the main site. These "slave" sites are edited, maintained and protected individually giving a high degree of autonomy whilst maintaining the integrity and identity of the organisation.
St Catherine's School website comprises six take2theweb modules, each maintained by different departments. These sit within the main school site and are overseen by Sue Lawrence, School Librarian who has designed the site. Sue says, "I am now beginning to work with heads of departments within the school to help them create their own websites that will be accessed from the main school portal within the Senior School site."
Involving members of the school or business community in website development increases ownership of the organisation, spreads the workload and helps ensure that sites are current, relevant and engaging.
Businesses can also taking advantage of the flexibility that take2theweb offers, for example, using embedded iFrames to bring franchisees' websites into the main company website. This not only benefits customers, who can find all the information they need in one place, but adds value to franchisees' sites and enhances their marketing potential.

Malsis School uses take2theweb
|
Increasingly Head Teachers and the teaching staff in Independent Schools value the need to have a website that responds to the needs of the whole community. The importance of presenting schools on the web in a professional way is becoming more and more important and an essential part of their marketing. Effective community websites that provide facilities for all members of the school's community are crucial to communicate the developments in curriculum, pedagogy, events and aspirations. Publishing to the web is fast becoming an integral part of their students' ICT experience.
This was clearly demonstrated at the Independent Education Show, where the Intuitive Media stand received a steady flow of educational professionals and service providers recognising that take2theweb can fulfill all of their community needs. Online publishing is key to the future of marketing and communication in the education sector - take2theweb is the ideal content management system.
One visitor said, "I have looked at a few content management systems, and take2theweb is by far the best system for us."
The Independent Education Show took place at ExCEL, London from 30 September to 1 October 2003.

Working Towards Online Collaborative Projects

Teachers Developing Projects
|
Intuitive Media recently developed and ran a workshop on behalf of the British Council for French and English teachers to support the Anglo/French Language Learning Agreement. This event was the first of it's kind and was hosted by the the British Council in Paris.
Primary and secondary school teachers from France and England came together to set up cross-curricular collaborative online learning projects that will enhance modern foreign languages learning in schools.
Intuitive Media have been involved in Global collaborative projects for many years and have pioneered ways of using technology to bring people together around the world. The need for greater collaboration world-wide becomes increasingly important as our Global economics become more inter-dependant and as our need for greater inter-cultural understanding grows.
Teachers from both countries worked enthusiastically together to produce projects which will stimulate their colleagues to participate. The teachers will continue to work together to refine the processes and produce outcomes that will be published online. The project website will invite new teachers to get involved and encourage other successful partnerships.
The event was a great success, and delegates came away enlivened and motivated to work together with their partner schools. Caroline Palmer-Filiol, English teacher at the Collège Les Prés, Issoire, Auvergne said, "It was definitely the most stimulating and satisfying experience I've had for a long time - a great opportunity to meet and discuss new ideas. It certainly boosted my motivation and desire to get on in there and make something new happen in the classroom."

There is now an affordable way for businesses to sell their products online. It's the new e-commerce bolt-on from take2theweb. It's cheap, quick to install and easy to use. For as little as £500, take2theweb customers can create a custom-built online shopping facility within their existing take2theweb sites.
Many e-commerce facilities vary their charges according to the number of products on sale. With take2theweb the fee is fixed, enabling businesses to grow at no extra cost.
The e-commerce package offers several options including order-only, or credit card facilities. All packages can be added to the website within a few days, and are safe and secure for clients and their customers.
David Salisbury from Travelling Man, a take2theweb customer, has added the e-commerce package to their site. He says: "I was sceptical at first about e-commerce, I thought it was going to be difficult to add in to our site. But the take2theweb system is really easy to use and quick to set up." The e-commerce facility has already brought in new customers. David says, "Many online customers have never visited our shops and are buying products that they can't find elsewhere."
