Phase Two of Grandmother & Me goes to Intuitive Media
Grandmother & Me is entering its second phase as Intuitive Media is awarded the task of continuing the project. IM will once again be partnering Blackpool LEA, and both parties will expand on the expertise gained during Phase One of the project and bring Grandmother & Me to more children in a wider range of schools.
Grandmother & Me brings together girls and their grandmothers and encourages them to think about and discuss the influence Science and Technology has on their lives. Each pair uses a video camera to interview each other where they talk about the role technology has played in their lives in the past and present, and how they anticipate it to affect them in the future. This helps to break down stereotypical views and expectations of women and technology, and builds closer inter-generational links based on understanding.
Phase Two will function over the six months leading up to Christmas 2005, and it is expected that the project will be able to take on greater numbers of participants in at least two additional schools within the Blackpool LEA. Children and Grandmothers will be using the latest digital video technology and Mobile Phone technology to record interviews and commentaries. John Hurst, ICT Advisor for the Blackpool LEA is particularly enthused by the extension of the project:
"A great opportunity to increase girls' self esteem and technology competences and help them see the value of science and technology in their own lives." There are already plans to roll out Grandmother & Me to the whole of Blackpool LEA in a third phase due out in 2006.

Intuitive Media project manager, John Smith, says, "Grandparents naturally have this vast experience from the past, and once their grandchildren begin to hear it, they're fascinated by it. We wanted to encourage girls and their grandmothers to realise how much they use technology in their everyday lives and to see how much things have changed."
Once the pilot has been completed, Grandmother and Me will be launched to schools across the country.
