Research reveals politics as least attractiveter career for schoolchildren
|
Intuitive Media Research reveals less than 1% of 8-14 year-olds want to be an MP when they grow up
DATE: Research released today by protected social learning network provider Intuitive Media (www.intuitivemedia.com) reveals that being a politician is bottom of the list of jobs to which schoolchildren aspire. A position in political office scored lowest in a poll of what more than 1,800 children aged 8-14 want to do when they grow up. Nearly 50 times more children said they would rather be a teacher, which was the most popular job.
The survey, which is part of wider research into children’s aspirations for the future, asked children what job they wanted to do when they grow up. Teacher came out top of the league with nearly 20% of the vote, closely followed by professional footballer with 16% and then Vet. The three jobs that children said they least aspired to are journalist, farmer and politician, which scored a lowly 0.4%.
Most desirable jobs:
1. Teacher
2. Footballer
3. Vet
Least desirable jobs:
21. Journalist
22. Farmer
23. Politician
The results are part of a major research project by protected social learning network company Intuitive Media. The company researched nearly 2,000 school-children aged between 6 and 14, all of whom are members of their protected online learning communities GoldStarCafe and SuperClubsPLUS. Questions ranged from job ambitions to education plans and future family aspirations.
Robert Hart, Co-Founder of Intuitive Media said, “This study has given us a fascinating insight into what today’s schoolchildren aspire to. This doesn’t just mean what jobs they would like, but who they think they will be living with, what family groupings they think they will be living in and their plans for further education.
“These children obviously relate to their teachers in a very strong way. It is also interesting to see that school-aged children are not inspired by careers in politics or journalism - possibly a reflection of the unflattering public perception of both professions.”
Intuitive Media runs GoldStarCafe.net and SuperClubsPLUS.com, both protected online learning communities used by schools across the UK, each monitored by a team of professional mediators to ensure child safety.

Intuitive Media launches wide new range of products and services
|
The world’s foremost protected social learning community for schoolchildren announces FIVE new products and services
BETT, January 10, 2007: Intuitive Media (www.intuitivemedia.com), the provider of protected online social learning networks for schools, including SuperClubsPLUS and GoldstarCafe, today announces the launch of a suite of new products and services. The company is bringing to market five new products which include three research tools, a new service for schools looking to expand their global reach and the ability to white-label the underlying Intuitive Media protected community technology.
The new products and services include: - A new research service allowing public and private sector organisations to access the opinions of Intuitive Media’s unique community of 120,000 6-14 year-olds and their teachers, each of whom is ID-checked offline before being allowed to join. The new IM Research facility, which has already been used by the DFES and Becta, allows government and ethical commercial organisations to survey this community with multiple choice and open-ended questions.
- As well as this survey facility Intuitive Media is also today announcing two additional research facilities. The first of these, called TestZone, allows companies and other organizations to test an idea or product with the community, providing timely feedback from a uniquely targeted demographic. Additionally the new Learning Channel facility also allows organisations to open up a forum and online magazine for children, encouraging them to discuss and input into a particular topic.
- Intuitive Media also today announces LinkUp Forums, a service which allows schoolchildren around the world to learn and communicate in a protected online environment. This service lets any school with an existing subscription and links with international schools free access to these forums, encouraging global interaction and learning. This is in line with the DFES targets for all UK schools to have international links by 2010. Where the partner school is in a developing country Intuitive Media will allow overseas children free membership.
- The final new product that Intuitive Media is bringing to market is the Intuitive Community Engine (ICE). This sophisticated tool is the underlying technology underpinning all communities currently run by Intuitive Media and can be customized to suit the needs of the owner, offering a customized out-of-the-box protected social networking capability. This solution offers full social networking capabilities, including Instant Messaging, Email, forums, homepages, search and more. As well as this ICE allows unique and highly sophisticated protection for users through mediation and monitoring tools.
Robert Hart, Co-Founder of Intuitive Media said, “The announcement of this new raft of products and services is a testament to the success and solid growth of our communities. By using an ethical approach to research we can ensure that organisations have access to a unique panel of age-verified 6-14 year olds, as well as allowing the children to have a voice and participate in future developments.
“The new LinkUp Forums open up a global learning experience where children from every walk of life can learn together and share information about one another’s lives in a protected space. In addition, by making our underlying technology available to anyone wanting to set up a protected online community, we are helping promote safe use of the internet through highly sophisticated mediation and moderation tools.”
