GridClub goes home
|
Connected Magazine Number 13, Summer 2005, by James Blomfield.
GridClub is the award-winning website and online community for 7-12 year olds. For more than three years now, thousands of Scottish teachers and pupils have been busy exploring the huge range of cross-curricular learning resources held within the GridClub website in their schools.
But those very same pupils have been tucking their user name and password away in their satchels to continue using GridClub at home. So whilst it has become a classroom activity in schools, it is also fast becoming an ever more popular after-school activity in computer clubs and at home.

GridClub goes sky-high
|
Connected Magazine Number 13, Autumn 2003.
Since its launch in Scotland last year, GridClub - the official SEED-funded online education project for 7-11 year-olds - has become an exciting part of children's education in and out of school. From remote islands to inner cities, young Scots' learning experiences have been broadened by the wide range of activities and secure online environment available at GridClub.
GridClub in Renfrewshire
In a very different part of Scotland, Renfrewshire Council has been ensuring the integration of GridClub across the authority. Headteachers and other staff from Renfrewshire schools gathered to enjoy a GridClub launch at Reid Kerr College in Paisley. Without a doubt, the stars of the event were six children from Thorn Primary School in Johnstone, who had the chance to show their own perspective on GridClub.
The children provided teachers with a touch of inspiration on how they could make the most of using GridClub in their schools. After a superb overview, Meghan offered an essential piece of advice to get those teachers involved: 'Remember, the best way to learn is to try it for yourselves!'
This advice was heeded, as the teachers then had their turn. Renfrewshire Council has now implemented a series of GridClub in-service days providing a demonstration and overview of GridClub for staff. Delegates had the chance to get some hands-on experience, taking their own exciting trip through GridClub and its 5-14 curriculum-linked activities. Carolyn Nixon from Heriot Primary School in Paisley provided a positive conclusion to these events by saying, 'GridClub will certainly be a valuable asset and resource that can be used in every curricular area. The children will enjoy the interactive aspect and links to the 5-14 guidelines will ensure easy planning for teachers!'
